The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the US president began displaying the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably definitely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The apparent and direct fact that the Savior from scripture requests a type of radical love focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you welcome them and welcome him or reject?
America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to what makes it unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and belief, a mixture that genuine US believers ought to accept.
