Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no new information.
