Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the capital showed an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the healthy level established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that blankets the city as colder weather approaches.

However earlier this year, the newly elected local administration petitioned the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".

Legal Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities agreed to the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital showed pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing declining pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of air contamination in Delhi have persisted as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the worst records ever measured in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Various Pollution Factors

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing toxic haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple research.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k early deaths annually in Delhi.
