According to figures from Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinian individuals have died while detained starting from October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has reported that the actual figure is likely considerably greater, as a result of numerous of disappeared detainees in Gaza.

Study Results

An updated study tracked deaths caused by physical violence, medical neglect, and starvation. Investigators employed freedom of information requests, forensic reports, and testimonies with legal representatives, activists, next of kin, and observers.

Despite the overall count of fatalities recorded being significantly higher than other recent estimates, it likely fails to capture the entire scope of Palestinian casualties, per the leader of the detainee affairs unit.

“Although we are presenting proof for a greater figure of fatalities than previously reported, this is not the entire story,” he said. “We are sure that there are even now people who perished in detention that we are unaware of.”

Civilian Deaths

Confidential official information indicates that the vast majority of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who died in jail were ordinary citizens, based on a parallel investigation.

In May of 2024, a defense forces registry following all combatants in Gaza, a roster of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, listed only 21 fatalities in custody. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in prison.

Detention Conditions

Brutality, torture, and other abuse of Palestinians has become routine across Israel’s prison network during the duration of conflict. Senior officials have publicly acknowledged starvation rations and an underground jail holding Palestinians who never see daylight.

Merely one incident of beating prisoners has come to trial, with the service member given a penalty to half a year. An attempt to charge others over a severe beating featuring sexual violence resulted in public rallies and the apprehension of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the alleged perpetrators now insisting that indictments against them be withdrawn.

No Legal Action

“Despite this mass number of deaths, throughout the conflict no one has been detained,” the representative said. “There have been no prosecutions over any death.

“While these measures remain in effect, every Palestinian in confinement faces risk, also the physically well individuals, even the youth who have no underlying conditions.”

Notable Incidents

Certain fatalities in detention have been widely reported, including a middle-aged medical chief who died in detention after a third of a year in custody.

A detainee held with the deceased testified that he was led to the yard by prison staff just prior to his demise, clearly wounded and exposed from the waist down. His body remains unreleased to Gaza.

Additional detainees who lost their lives in detention in Israel are unidentified. The prison service and defense forces provided researchers with the total of fatalities in confinement, and limited further data including the facility where they perished, but not the inmates’ personal details.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, primarily detainees from Gaza, investigators could not to connect the few details given by officials to a fatality documented by advocacy bodies, via statements from former inmates or reporting in the media.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their relatives’ casualties either, as Israel has made it difficult to monitor Palestinians it is holding. During 210 days at the outset of the war, the Israeli military declined to provide basic information about the whereabouts of many of people held in Gaza, effectively implementing a policy of unacknowledged detention, according to the rights monitoring body.
